Subject: The Supreme Court of Québec has sentenced to life imprisonment Désiré Munyaneza for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed between 1 April and 31 July 1994 in the province of Butare (Ruanda). It is the first time that a Canadian Court applies the Loi sur le Crimes de Guerre et les Crimes contre l’humanité adopted in 2000 to put into effect the obligation of the State deriving from the ratification of the statute of the International Criminal Court and to prosecute international crimes before the Canadian Courts.
