Subject: The Appeals Chamber of the Special Court for Sierra Leone has confirmed by majority the sentence against three former leaders of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Sierra Leone. The former interim Leader of the RUF, Hassan Issa Sesay, and the Senior commander of the RUF, Morris Kallon, had both been sentenced in first degree in February 2009, for 16 count indictments for war crimes and crimes against humanity for the atrocities committed during the decade- long civil war in Sierra Leone. Also the former head of security of the RUF Agostino GBAO has been sentenced for 14 count indictments. The Appeals Chamber has confirmed the sentence for the attacks against the UN peacekeepers and for the conscription and use of child soldiers and, for the first time for an International court, has confirmed the sentence against forced weddings, deemed as crimes against humanity.
