Type: Acts of the European Union: European Parliament Resolution on the implementation in the European Union of Directive 2003/9/EC laying down minimum standards for the reception of asylum seekers and refugees
Authority: European Authorities - European Union: European Parliament
Date: 02/05/2009
Subject: The European Parliament, having established that the existing directives were being poorly applied, or were not being applied at all, by some Member States, stressed that the principles of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the ECHR, such as the right to live in dignity, the protection of family life, access to health care and the right of effective recourse against detention, should be applied at all times and regardless of the irregular status of the third-country national involved. The European Parliament called for brochures explaining all the rights of asylum seekers to be made available to them in the main international languages, exhorting Member States to provide a public interpreting service free of charge, free legal aid and medical cover. A particular protection has to be assured to vulnerable persons, such as minors.
Classification: Freedoms - Art. 18 Right to asylum
