Subject: The Court held unanimously that there had been:a violation of Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment) of the European Convention on Human Rights on account of the inadequate medical assistance provided to Mr Mechenkov while in detention;a failure to comply with Article 34 (right of individual petition) on account of the Russian authorities’ attempts to discuss with Mr Mechenkov his application to the European Court of Human Rights and their opening of his correspondence; and,no failure to comply with Article 34 on account of the disciplinary sanctions imposed on the applicant.
