Presentation

This website, in the English, French and Italian versions, aims to provide systematic monitoring of judicial, legislative and other materials related to the protection of fundamental rights in Europe.

For this purpose we periodically update the website with the references necessary to identify and consult:

  • European laws and other acts and measures of the European Union or of the Council of Europe concerning the protection of fundamental rights;
  • Decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and of the Court of Justice of the European Communities, as well as the decisions of national judges applying norms or principles of European origin in the matter of fundamental rights;
  • Studies, comments and other particularly important acts, also of non-European origin.

The information is organized using as frame of reference the rights provided by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and a word list obtained from the Charter. Every document is added in the original language and summarized in its essential contents in the three languages of the website. Only the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights are not integrally included and can be consulted in the website of the Court (see Link). Particular attention is reserved to the question of effectiveness of the Charter of Rights, to innovative jurisprudential interpretations and to the relation between the Courts. The reader will thus easily be able to reconstruct, right by right, the evolution of the legal framework.

Every two months the website publishes a newsletter highlighting the principal novelties concerning laws, decisions and comments.

The present website is the essential support and documental source for a wider project of construction of an "Observatory on Fundamental Rights in Europe", which, through meetings, studies, collaborations with other institutions, universities, journals and associations, aims at raising attention on this topic, essential to the process of integration, in a widened dialogue between jurists, experts and citizens of the European Union.
