Notes & Comments (09/11/2009) - The entry into force of Lisbon Treaty and the perspective of the European criminal law

Title: The entry into force of Lisbon Treaty and the perspective of the European criminal law

Date: 11/09/2009

Subject: The imminent entry into force of Lisbon Treaty is intended to affect radically the EU institutional framework. In particular, the abolition of Third Pillar, the implementation of a common core of crimes and the development of mutual recognition and the strengthening of Eurojust, will form an embryonic European criminal law. At the same time, the reference to the Charter of Nice and the perspective of adhesion of European Union to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights, ensure that the foundations of the area of freedom, security and justice should combine the values of efficiency with the necessary respect for fundamental rights.
