Other Acts - (28/08/2007)
Type: Acts of the European Union: report on racism and xenophobia in the Member States of the EU
Authority: European Authorities - European Union (EU Fundamental Rights Agency)
Subject: The EU Fundamental Rights Agency adopted a report on Racism and Xenophobia in the Member States of the EU. It is not its annual report, but rather a report worked out on the legal basis of the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia which the Agency has replaced.
Information collected in 2006 points to ethnic discrimination and inequalities in employment, education and housing. There is ample evidence that racist violence and discrimination persist and in fact are increasing in parts of the EU. The EU Fundamental Rights Agency notes that the EU’s legislation on racial equality is gradually stimulating positive change. The Agency finds that there is more awareness regarding discrimination, and the need to combat it, among politicians, the media and the public.
The very low level of complaints recorded in some countries during 2006 suggests however that victims are unaware of the existing legal protection against discrimination.
