Other Acts P6_TA-PROV (2009)0385 (07/05/2009)

Type: Acts of the European Union: European Parliament Resolution on the Annual Report on Human Rights in the World 2008 and the European Union's policy on the matter

Authority: European Authorities - European Union: European Parliament

Date: 05/07/2009

Subject: The European Parliament reiterated its conviction that, in order to effect an improvement in the promotion of human rights, the EU's common foreign and security policy needs to be strengthened. It also called for continued maximum vigilance as regards respect for the human rights clauses in the agreements signed by the EU and its third-country partners, and for such clauses to be included systematically in future agreements. For this reason it called on the Council and the Commission to identify the "countries of particular concern" where it is particularly difficult to promote human rights, as well as countries in which human rights are violated, and, to that end, to develop criteria by which to measure countries by reference to their human rights score, thereby enabling specific policy priorities to be established. Finally, it welcomed the agreement between the Commission and the Council of Europe concerning cooperation in the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights
