Subject: The European Parliament, having affirmed that the European Union institutions should actively promote and safeguard fundamental rights and take full account of them when drafting and adopting legislation, focused on the EU Agency of fundamental rights, on the cooperation with the Council of Europe and the other international organisations responsible for the protection of fundamental rights, on the development of Area of Freedom, Security and Justice not in a repressive approach, on the necessity to combat all forms of discrimination, on the need to introduce effective, long-term legal migration policies, on the rights of children and on the social rights.

Notices: The European Parliament made a reference several times on the Charter of fundamental rights, highlighting that it will become legally binding when the Treaty of Lisbon will be in force. The European Parliament underlined moreover that, irrespective of its legal status, the Charter has over the years become a source of inspiration in the case-law of the European courts, such as the Court of First Instance and the European Court of Justice, the ECtHR and many constitutional courts.
