Other Acts - (05/08/2008)

Type: Acts of the European Union: Report of the European Union’s Agency for fundamental rights on violent attacks against Roma people in the Ponticelli District of Naples

Authority: European Authorities - European Union (EU Fundamental Rights Agency)

Date: 08/05/2008

Subject: The EU Fundamental Rights Agency adopted its report immediately after the violent anti-Roma incidents which took place in Italy in May of 2008. The report illustrates the climate of intolerance generated by the events in Ponticelli and it also presents examples of the critical reactions of civil society and international bodies to the Events. The report shows that protecting fundamental rights in the European Union requires that governments comply with the duty to respect, protect and promote fundamental rights not only by providing the necessary legal safeguards, but also by ensuring that these are applied effectively in practice by public authorities at the national, regional and local level.
