Subject: The European Parliament, having recognised that equality between women and men is a fundamental right and principle of the EU, recognised by the Treaty establishing the European Community and by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, calls on the Commission to set out, using reliable data and statistics, a coherent programming, implementation, monitoring, and assessment cycle of policies and programmes aimed at supporting gender equality. The European Parliament calls on the Commission to treat gender equality policy not just as a priority for the EU, but also, and above all, as an indispensable requirement of respect for the rights of the individual. Gender equality must represent an essential element of accession negotiations with candidate countries and of EU's neighbourhood policies.
