Other Acts P6_TA-PROV (2008)0212 (20/05/2008)

Type: Acts of the European Union: European Parliament Resolution on progress made in equal opportunities and non-discrimination in the EU

Authority: European Authorities - European Union: European Parliament

Date: 05/20/2008

Subject: The European Parliament, highlighting that Community law does not currently cover discrimination in most areas of Community competence and at Member State level there is a patchwork of legislation across Member States and low level of awareness of anti-discrimination legislation among citizens, calls for a unified approach to combating discrimination and it urges the Commission to carefully monitor the transposition of Directives, and to continue to put pressure on the Member States to respect their legal obligations. It is interesting to highlight that the European Parliament considers that discrimination must also be seen as interfering with the four fundamental freedoms and as such constitutes an obstacle to the functioning of the internal market.

Classification: Equality - Art. 21 Non discrimination - Art. 23 Equality between men and women
